AFGHANISTAN HANDS IRAN A LESSON

Ebrahim Badrouzeh

Afghanistan v Iran at Selangor Turf Club

AFGHANISTAN WON BY 9 WICKETS

Afghanistan raced to a thumping nine-wicket victory over Iran at the Selangor Turf Club to guarantee themselves a place at the top of Group D.

Poor technique cost Iran mightily as batsman after batsman found themselves in a tangle against Afghanistan’s fiery attack. Afghanistan, to be fair, pitched the ball up a lot more than they did against Qatar not wanting to unnecessarily hurt their struggling opponents.

Iran’s batsmen as exemplified by opener Ebrahim Badrouzeh (38 off 123 deliveries) let a lot of deliveries pass either side of the wicket, seeking only defence as a form of attack but it was invariably only a matter of time before a straight one either found the edge or had the batsman trapped in front. Three batsmen fell to run-outs which didn’t help their cause either.

In a rain-affected match, the Iran innings closed on 89 for 7 after 42 overs. In reply, Afghanistan wasted no time in reaching the target and this where Iran, according to the Afghan captain Raees Ahmadzai, are “better at bowling than batting.” As it was, innate athleticism is innate athleticism and Karim Khan fell to an absolute blinder high to the right of Abdolvahab Ebrahimpiour at cover to let the Afghans know that Iran deserve some respect.
