Qatar v Thailand at The Royal Selangor Club

QATAR WON BY SEVEN WICKETS

Qatar raced to a seven-wicket victory inside 40 overs against plucky Thailand at the Royal Selangor Club to almost guarantee themselves a place in the quarter-finals.

On paper it may have looked like an easy victory, but Qatar had to work for their runs and had the anchorman Muhammad Jahangir not been dropped twice on his way to 90, then Qatar would have found the going a lot tougher.

Muhammad Jahangir takes a run

Malaysian conditions have been very demanding on the Qataris, Jahangir vomited on the pitch mid-way through his innings and centurion Irfan Hussain was cramping badly after two hours of batting and retired the moment he made a 100.

Thailand just don’t have an edge or any depth to their bowling yet. As a batting team they’re certainly stronger and looked to have things well in control at the 40 over mark at 190 for 4 but then a rash of wickets fell and the platform to accelerate given to them by John Hottinger (50), Richard Bowater (37), Zeeshan Khan (29) and Shyam Sideek (40) was not built upon.

Spinners Saleem Akhtar and Qamar Sadiq bowled their 20 overs for 58 runs picking up 4 wickets. 229 was always gettable particularly against the Thai bowling and even though they bowled their hearts out, and took a super catch at square leg to dismiss Qatar’s captain early on, Qatar won quite comfortably.
