31 cricketing enthusiasts, some of them players, some of them part-time coaches, some of them occasional umpires have passed through a Singapore Cricket Association Level 0 Umpiring Course. The five-day course was conducted by ACC Umpires Educator Sarika Prasad, with assistance from P.R.Kumar and M.V. Ramesh. "If we don’t train umpires properly, cricket overall will suffer," says Sarika who has been on the ICC Associates and Affiliate Panel since 2005.

With 104 registered teams in Singapore and up to 25 games every week, there is a significant need for umpires in the city state. “I’m happy to say we field two umpires a match in all of them and that we have more than a hundred active umpires on our books,” says Sarika. The aspiring umpires who pass the course examination next get paired with a senior umpire in lower division local league matches so that learning continues in the most efficient manner. The candidates who show “improvement and commitment” in this course Sarika says, will move up to an ACC Level I later in the year.

Throughout the year, Sarika also runs, in batches of 10 umpires at a time, High Performance courses to keep umpires at all levels monitored and benefiting from feedback between him and them.
