Day 2: THAILAND CONQUER

Arnab Chaudhuri and Wanchan Uisuk walk off undefeated

An enterprising Thailand beat a gutsy China by ten wickets in the latest Bangkok group match. Thailand are now just one win from securing a semi-final playoff berth.

Put into bat, China's openers Chen Zhifa and Zhan Jinhui adopted what felt like a 5-Year Plan of block, leave, block, block. They showed no little skill - "their shot selection was excellent" said Thailand's coach, John Hottinger – but any ball middled invariably went straight to the infield.

A Thai attack of this quality will get anybody out and once the breach was made in the 14th over (Chen Zhifa for 6 off 58 balls) the rest of the wickets fell steadily. Some acceleration was made after the 20 th over, but the first four was hit only in the 30th over. Thailand's ground-fielding was exceptional throughout, Wanchana Uisuk taking a spectacular head-high diving catch at mid-on to dismiss the classy Zhao Xu.

China's 56 (35 overs) was never going to be enough, honest and persevering as China's bowlers were and Thailand's Arnab Chaudhuri (playing in front of his mother and little sister) simply blasted his way towards the target. His pulled six over square leg off Chen Xiudong was the shot of the match.
