Future Stars, winners of the inaugural Nelson Mandela Cricket Cup in Kuwait

Kuwait Cricket joined with the Embassy of South Africa in Kuwait to host the Nelson Mandela Cricket Cup at the end of November. The ten-team event was held to “create awareness of the values that Nelson Mandela represents and the power of sports in bringing people of different nationalities and backgrounds together.” Open to ten teams of U-16s, and a ladies’ team, the 9-a-side event was played over the course of one long day at the Sulaibiya cricket ground.

The tournament received extensive local media coverage. “It is always heartening to see young cricketers be excited to excel, it was a very happy day. More than that, Nelson Mandela who is so well known to us has now inspired another generation. Mr. Mandela’s life is a continuing example and HE Delarey van Tonder and his officials have done a great thing in backing the tournament,” says Kuwait Cricket Director General Asad Baig. The aptly-named Future Stars beat Gladiators to win the Nelson Mandela Cricket Cup. The South African embassy hopes to make the event an annual one in Kuwait.
