Pakistan under-23 team eased to a comprehensive 225 runs victory in the opening group B match of the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup at the National Stadium Karachi on Thursday, December 6.

Pakistan openers Sahibzada Farhan and Ali Imran smacked centuries and shared an opening wicket partnership of 219 runs to pommel Hong Kong, China, which in their turn cave in to home side bowler Muhammad Ilyas’ to the line attack.

Ilyas made an impact in the opening match with a hat-trick as his victims were Raag Kapur, Babar Hayat and Waqas Khan.

Farhan and Imran scored nearly run a ball hundreds to pile on a heap of runs getting Pakistan on way to 366 for three in 50 overs. In their response, Hong Kong fell like a house of cards and could muster 141 runs in 34 overs.

The agony Hong Kong bowlers faced at the hands of Pakistan openers was later swelled when Khushdil Shah, coming at number three. He hammered a 40-ball 83.

Asked to bat, openers Farhan and Imran provided a flying start to Pakistan with the former getting 130 runs in 125 balls while the latter scored 107 runs in 104 balls.

The two openers toyed with the Hong Kong bowlers throughout their stay at the crease in which Farhan smashed 17 boundaries including two over the ropes. As of Imran, he timed the ball 12 times across the boundary, his hits also had one six.

Hong Kong bowlers tried their every bit to put a clamp on Pakistan openers but success came their way only after 37 overs when Ehsan Nawaz had Imran mistimed his shot to Raag Kapur. The chemistry the openers developed was carried on by Khushdil who joined Farhan to take the score to 267. But Farhan fell to Hong Kong captain Aizaz Khan in the 41st over.

Though Khushdil lost a stable partner but he did not budge and kept hitting hard to have nine fours and four sixes to his score. On the other end, Pakistan captain Muhammad Rizwan came in to get 33 runs in 26 balls. Khushdil after having scored 83 runs became the second victim of Aizaz and by the close of Pakistan innings Rizwan was at the crease with Hussain Talat (six) with score being 366.

The foundation, Pakistan openers laid gave its attack enough confident to apply pressure on Hong Kong batsmen. Their openers Nizakat Khan and Aizaz were trapped by Pakistan bowlers Hussain and Sameen Gul in the third and eighth overs. When the score was 38, Ilyas struck three times, taking the wickets of Raag, Babar and Waqas for his hat-trick. Later the innings of Nizakat also terminated and Hong Kong was reeling at five for 53, which later folded at 141 in 35 overs.

Ilyas later had another two wickets, taking five in all for 35 including a hat-trick.

Only resistance Pakistan attack faced came from Hong Kong wicket-keeper batsman Shahid Wasif who scored 59 runs. Other prominent from their batting line up were Nizakat 25, Raag 13, Ehsan 17 and Tanwir Afzal 21.

Khusdil had two wickets from Pakistan attack while Sameen, Talat and Muhammad Asghar shared one wicket each in the win.

Pakistan will now face United Arab Emirates emerging team in its second match of the tournament on Friday, December 7 at the same venue while group A matches will also roll into action in Sri Lanka on the day.
