ACC Twenty20 Cup 2009 DAY 4: AFGHANISTAN SUBDUE SAUDI ARABIA

Afghanistan's Obaidullah Kunari charges in

Afghanistan's bowlers proved they're as formidable as their batsmen in knocking over Saudi Arabia for 72 at Al Dhaid, in the latest ACC Twenty20 Cup match.

U-19 graduate Obaidullah Kunari has put on yards of pace since he first put on an Afghan shirt and with it, terrific control. He struck in his first over, Shafiq Ahmed late on a pull. Fellow U-19 alumnus Hamid Hassan has been very good for a very long time and opened with a maiden which tested Saudi Arabia's talented Mohammad Abdullah to the full.

After 5 overs, Saudi Arabia were 13-1. Kunari stayed on one over too many; tiring, 19 came off his fourth, the batsmen breaking the shackles with two 6s and a straight-driven 4. Wickets kept falling though, and at the half-way stage of their innings Saudi Arabia were 41-4.

Saudi Arabia went boundary-less from then on. Nowroz Mangal going for the jugular early by bringing back Hamid Hassan for his third over. He duly obliged with the wicket of Hussain Anwar and then Mohammad Nabi chipped in with two Saudis in his first over.

After 15 overs Saudi Arabia were 57-8. Nowroz Mangal had chipped in with two well-judged catches. "I give credit to my bowlers," he said modestly, afterwards. Even the dangerous, if hamstrung, Suhrab Kilsingatakam had been subdued. Saudi Arabia were all out for 72 in the 19th over.

Afghanistan passed 50 with a 6 flicked over square leg by Mohammad Shahzad in the seventh over and he finished things off with a 6 over long-on in the next over. He'd missed breakfast in the morning, having overslept, and was in a rush to have lunch.

Afghanistan now meet hosts UAE on Saturday to determine who finishes unbeaten and on top of Group A.
