DAY 6: AFGHANISTAN OVERCOME

  • Afghanistan v UAE: Start of play has been delayed due to moisture having settled on the pitch overnight. The umpires will inspect at 0230 hrs GMT. Play is likely to start at 0330 hrs GMT, in just over an hour's time
  • Teams have been declared

UAE: Aqib Malik, Zamin Jaleel, Chirag Suri, Justin James, Reuben Abraham, Sathya Naresh, Dan D'Souza, Waleed Ahmad, Rohit Singh, Mohsin Khan, Saurabh Gir, 12th: Kirk Abraham

  • Afghanistan: Shir Shirzai, Najibullah Zadran, Aftab Alam, Rahmatullah Sahaq, Younas Ahmadzai, Hashmatullah Shaidi, Afsar Khan Zazai, Mohibullah Paak, Noor ul Haq, Abdul Rashid, 12th man: Dawood Bahram
  • UAE have made change since their previous match, Justin James comes in place of Mohammad Hamid and Afghanistan have made two, Noor ul Haq and Amanullah Amin in place of Mohammad Yamin and Dawood Bahram - both teams strengthening their batting therefore. Prudent move on what is the more difficult wicket to bat on of the two used in Bangkok for the tournament so far
  • There have been hot air blowers on the wicket in an attempt to dry it out. The sun is shining but conditions are still hazy. The Match Referee Richard Folds reports, following the 9.30 inspection, that "conditions are noticeably better than they were before" and another inspection is scheduled for 0300 hrs GMT, in about 25 minutes
  • The three matches in the ACC U-19 Elite Cup on Sunday have a lot riding on them, Oman v Thailand in Group B will decide who goes down to the Challenge Group (four years to the next chance to qualify for the ICC U/19 World Cup) and Group A's Hong Kong v Malaysia will decide the semi-finalists as will Afghanistan v UAE right here starting in about an hour from now today
  • Umpires are out in the middle now, inspecting the wicket, it looks the bower's landing area at the Don Muang End is causing most concern
  • Lots of dew in the morning, the footprints initially left on the wet grass are now fading in the hazy sunshine but still a sense of dampness in the air
  • Battle between sunshine and humidity here at the Asian Institute of Technology ground on the outskirts of Bangkok
  • Umpires still out in the middle, inspecting the wicket, no play looks possible for at least another half an hour
  • The overs to be played if the match starts at 0400 hrs, will be 45 a side
  • In this group, unbeaten Nepal have already qualified for the semi-finals. UAE and Afghanistan, with one defeat each (to Nepal) - the winner of this match will go through to the semi-finals also
  • Group A of the ACC U-19 Elite Cup, being played in Chang Mai in northern Thailand, is set up nicely too for the final day. Qatar are already through to the semis from there, but any one of the other four, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Bahrain and Singapore still have a chance of getting through
  • The Umpires AK Rana and Sanjay Sarda of Thailand have come back and say that the toss will take place in 15 minutes' time. We're looking at a start in about 30 minutes time, 0345 hrs GMT
  • Lunch will be shortened by 15 minutes, the extra 30 minutes allowed are being used and if play starts at 0345 it'll be a 46 overs a side match. One of a few possible scenarios, the most optimistic one!
  • It'cs certainly getting warmer as the sun rises but there's still quite a bit of haze - the stronger the sun, the quicker play can start - the dew being burned off
  • Good news! The umpires have just returned from another inspection and say play will start at 0345hrs GMT, in 14 minutes time
  • Toss....
  • Afghanistan v UAE, 2011 ACC U-19 Elite Cup: Afghanistan have won the toss and elected to bowl
  • It'll be a 46-overs a side match and play will start in 7 minutes
  • Afghanistan gathered on the outfield, sit in a circle getting last minute instructions from their coach Asadullah Khan
  • UAE's openers Reuben Abraham and Zamin Jaleel striding out to join the umpires - Afghanistan running on after them
  • Reuben Abraham RHB to take strike for UAE, Aftab Alam to bowl the first ball for Afghanistan
  • Game on!
  • 46-overs a side - and Aftab's first ball is on the money, forces Reuben to dig it out
  • UAE have plenty of talent in batting and bowling
Afghanistan's Aftab Alam

  • FOUR pulled away by Zamin behind square (he's the first batsman not, Reuben, apologies) and UAE showing positive intent
  • WICKET Aftab strikes! Bowls Zamin as the batsman tries an expansive shot, head in the air and UAE are 6 for 1 after 5 balls
Captain to captain

  • UAE captain Aqib Malik LHB is in
  • End of the first over, UAE 6 for 1
  • Afghanistan's captain Shir Shirzai RFM comes on, has done well with his cutters so far this tournament but has been spraying it down leg too
  • 'Keeper Afsar standing up to him
  • WICKET Shir strikes! Reuben out second ball for 0, caught at silly mid on by Amanullah and Afghanistan have UAE 6 for 2 after eight balls
  • Good toss to win, ball just popping a bit on Reuben and he played a fraction too early
  • WICKET Two in two, Shir hits the top of Sathya Ramesh's off-stump the batsman playing down the wrong line and Shir does a small race around the infield chased by his team-mates, UAE 6 for 3 after nine balls and Shir on a hat-trick
  • Two close catchers now
  • FOUR wides down the leg side, hat-trick ball!
  • UAE new batsman is Chirag Suri RHB
  • Chirag takes a run first ball he hits, pushing off the back foot and UAE are 13 for 3 after 10 balls
  • Lots for UAE captain Aqib Malik to do here, UAE 13 for 3 after 2 overs, Aqib 0*, Chirag 1* Aftab 1-0-6-1, Shir 1-0-7-2
  • Two slips for Aftab as he starts his second over, just fine leg and third man outside the circle
  • Aftab beats Chirag outside off, the ball climbing, UAE 14 for 3 in the third over
  • Variable bounce in this wicket, batting not easy at all
  • Aftab with four length-balls on off, perhaps setting the batsman up for the yorker...
  • WIDE! UAE 15 for 3 in the third over
  • EDGED, falls short of slip and races away to fine third man, FOUR to Chirag, UAE 19 for 3 after 3 overs
  • Aqib Malik LHB getrs two with a firm push to leg off Shir, UAE 21 for 3 at the start of the fourth over
  • Shir has one slip and a gully, fine leg and third man on the boundary, Afsar the 'keeper again standing up, looks like he prefers bowling his cutters to right-handers as he hasn't quite settled into a grooved line
  • Aqib Malik, UAE's captain, tall and serious-looking left-hander, 2 off the over and UAE are 21 for 3 off 4 overs, Chirag 5*, Aqib 2*, Aftab 1-12, Shir 2-9
  • Three to Chirag as he clips a low full-toss well to mid-wicket, good chase by Noor to save the boundary, UAE 24 for 3 in the fifth over
  • Good running by Aqib, pushing Aftab in front of square for a single, UAE positive and not intimidated at all, good to see
  • Good technique by these two batsmen, five off the over, UAE 26 for 3 after 5 overs, Aqib 3*, Chirag 8*, Aftab 1-17, Shir 2-9
  • Aqib drives off bended knee, picks up three to point, three Afghan fielders chasing - good shot off a slightly over-pitched delivery outside off and UAE are 30 for 3 in the sixth over
  • Good running gets UAE two runs to third man next ball, 32 for 3 in the sixth over
  • FOUR off the back-foot by Chirag, driving Shir through cover and goes all the way. Top shot, UAE 36 for 3 in the sixth
  • No ball by Shir and a free hit to come
  • Firm drive straight to the fielder by Chirag for the FREE HIT, no run and after six ovdrs, UAE are 37 for 3, partnership of 30 so far
  • Aftab taken off after 3-1-17-1, to be replaced by Noor-ul Haq (OB) at the University End
  • MAIDEN by Noor, aided by some good fielding
  • Aftab comes on from the Don Muang End now, UAE 37 for 3 after 7 overs
  • Aftab bowls a beauty, kicking up off a length, Afsar collecting head-high, Chirag looks unflustered though
  • As Avinash Karn of Nepal found, it helps the strike bowler to bowl form the Don Muang End at the AIT Ground, whatever breeze there is, helps inswing and there's more bounce and carry than from the University End
  • Chirag glances an attempted yorker down to fine-leg, good stroke for 1, UAE 40 for 3 in the eight over
  • Another attempted yorker, and another run, this time to Aqib, UAE 41 for 3, Chirag 15*, Aqib 7*, Aftab 4-0-21-1
  • Mohibullah Paak RM comes on at the University End after Noor-ul Haq's solitary over
  • Shir Shirzai looking to keep the UAE batsmen in check from one end, while attacking with Aftab from the other
  • Aqib, now used to the slow wicket, has plenty of time to wait for one of Mohibullah's pace
  • DROPPED CHANCE Slip drops the sharp chance offered by Chirag off Mohibullah, UAE 43 for 3 in the ninth over
  • Mohibullah appeals for lbw against Aqib, the ball pitched well-up but probably sliding down leg as Afsar the 'keeper didn't join in, UAE 43 for 3 after nine overs, partnership of 36 so far
  • Afghansitan's captain Shir Shirzai RM ringing the changes, brings himself back on from the Don Muang End, figures of 2-20 off 3 overs so far
  • Chirag plays a false stroke third ball of the over, the checked drive just looping over Shir's outstretched left hand
  • Shir finding a testing line and length to the right-handed Chirag, and bowls a MAIDEN
  • UAE 43 for 3 after 10 overs, Aqib 8* off 25 balls, Chirag 16* off 28 balls, partnership of 36 so far
  • Mohibullah RM to continue, 'keeper up to the bat and all but two inside the circle
  • FOUR Aqib drives on the up through mid-off, in the air for a while but nowhere near a fielder, UAE 47 for 3 and a good recovery being led by their captain
  • UAE 47 for 3 after 11 overs, Aqib 12*, Chirag 16*, Mohibullah 0-6, Shir 2-20
  • UAE 51 for 3 after 69 balls, really good effort by them. Afghanistan finding this fourth-wicket pair difficult to dislodge
  • DROPPED CHANCE thin edge off Shir by Chirag to the keeper, Teflons out
  • WICKET next ball however, Chirag caught at short midwicket Najibullah and Shir Shirzai has his third of the morning and Chirag goes for a good 17, UAE 51 for 4 after 12 overs
  • FOUR Aqib's good when he gets low! Off bended knee cutting Mohibullah through backward point, UAE 55 for 4 in the 13th, Aqib 19* from 35 balls
  • New batsman is Dan D'Souza RHB
  • Last ball of Mohibullah's over really climbs off a length and Aqib jerks back in surprise, dropping his wrist, UAE 55 for 4 after 13 overs, Aqib 19*, D'Souza 0*, Mohibullah 0-10, Shir 3-24
  • WICKET Najibulallah pouches at short mid-wicket again, the ball popping again, and Shir has his fourth wicket, D'Souza going for 0, UAE 55 for 5 after 13.2 overs and it's DRINKS too
  • Batting hasn't been easy at all on this two-paced, irregularly bouncing wicket but UAE haven't done too badly in the circumstances. They'll no doubt be feeling they could have done just the same if they'd been bowling
  • Saurabh Gir, Man of the Match, in yesterday's match against Oman for his bowling, is the new batsman
  • Shir Shirzai ends his sixth over with figures of 4-25, done a good job for his team, as Aqib Malik 19* (42 balls) wants to do for his UAE team, UAE 56 for 5 after 14 overs
  • EDGE by Saurabh off Mohibullah flies well wide off first slip, UAE 57 for 5 as the batsman gets off the mark
  • Fifteen overs gone, UAE 57 for 5, it's a 46-over match because of the late start due to a wet pitch and UAE'll be happy to bat through all of them
  • Saurabh doesn't look as assured as Aqib out there, and Afghanistan sense a wicket any moment, long mid-pitch chat between the batsmen at the end of the 16th over, UAE 59 for 5
  • Noor ul Haq OB on in place of Mohibullah at the University End, one maiden so far, and almost strikes with his first ball to Aqib
  • End of the over, UAE 62 for 3, Aqib 20* (45 balls), Saurabh 6* (17 balls), Shir 7-1-27-4
  • FOUR to Aqib as Shir continues, flicked over square leg first ball of the eighteenth over
  • Two runs, scrambled, as Aqib dives headfirst into the crease for the second, the wicket's broken by the throw but he's home. In some pain though, looks like he's jarred a knee and elbow as physio Chitrala Sudhaker spends quite some time with him in the middle
  • UAE 69 for 5 in the eighteenth over
  • Aqib fit to continue, albeit stiffly
  • UAE 71 for 5 after 18 overs, Aqib 26* (51 balls) and Saurabh 6* (16 balls), Shir *-1-33-4, Noor ul Haq 2-1-3-0
  • 'One wicket will get two' as Geoffrey Boycott says, but UAE enjoying their second-highest partnership of the innings so far at the moment, worth 20
  • The match settling into that mid-innings stretch at the moment, Shir to bowl his ninth over, one bowler is allowed to bowl 10 overs, today, with the match reduced to 46-overs a side because of the late start
  • End of the 20th over, four off the Shir over, UAE 79 for 5
  • Abdul Rashid SLA replacing Noor ul Haq, 3-1-7-0, at the University End
  • Afghanistan has a good varied attack
  • WICKET, UAE's captain is out for 28 (56 balls, three 4s) having been there from the last ball of the first over, Abdul Rashid scooting one in through the gap, the ball keeping low and UAE are 79 for 6 after 20.2 overs
  • New batsman is Mohsin Khan RHB, even taller than Aqib, though not quite so serious-looking
  • Mohsin after being beaten by one that spun away and bounced first ball, hits the next, a full toss for FOUR through mid-on, UAE 84 for 6 after 21 overs
  • Shir Shirzai RM to bowl his tenth and final over, not as much bite now as at the start of the innings as the wicket settles down into a slow and low track
  • Shir keeping the ball right up to the bat, only backward point, third man, fine leg and long-off on the boundary of the five fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle, short-extra close in
  • WICKET Mohsin hoists a drive off an Abdul Rashid ful-length delivery on leg stump high towards long-on and Mohibullah, running back to within a yard of the boundary from mid-on has time to turn and wait for the ball, until, a sudden gust takes the ball beyond him and he has to turn to take the ball behind him inches from the ground and the boundary rope
  • Wonderful catch. UAE are 87 for 7 after 23.1 overs
  • Mohsin's out for 7 off 7 balls and replacing Shir Shirzai, 10-1-40-4, at the Don Muang End is Aftab Alam RMF, to bowl his fifth over the day, 1-21 for Aftab so far
  • Saurabh handling Aftab well, off front and back foot, Aftab more arm and less trunk today, as he concentrates it seems on accuracy and not sheer pace as he did against Nepal two days ago
  • Still plenty of effort from the young Afghan though, and an attacking field
  • UAE have run very well throughout their innings, probably added 10 to their score this way, 91 for 7 in the 24th over
  • Three off Aftab's fifth over, Saurabh Gir 15* (39 balls), Rohit Singh 0*, UAE 91 f0r 7 after 24 overs
  • Abdul Rashid SLA 2-0-6-2 so far, to continue from the University End
  • Has bowled well, giving the ball plenty of air and a chance to turn, inviting the drive and the possible catches
  • And the possible boundaries as Saurabh swings him over the sqaure leg fielder on the boundary for SIX, UAE 98 for 7 in the 25th over
  • UAE 98 for 7 after 25 overs, decent run-rate but have lost those wickets, still anything above 120 will be a challenging target for the Afghan batsmen, strong as it may be
  • WICKET Aftab gets the yorker going and toe-crushes Saurabh Gir for lbw for a good 22 (47 balls, 1 six), Aftab's second wicket, doesn't matter how slow the wicket is if you're attacking the base of the stumps, UAE 98 for 8 in the 26th over
  • End of over 26, UAE 99 for 8, both batsmen at the crease Rohit and Waleed yet to score, Aftab 2-26 off his six overs so far
  • Abdul Rashid SLA looks quite a wily operator, varying his flight and pace of delivery
  • MAIDEN by Rashid, and UAE remain 99 for 8, 27 overs gone
  • 100 up for UAE as Waleed gets off the mark by glancing Aftab off the back foot
  • Even the UAE tail-enders look like they have good technique
  • Aftab really trying to break through with these yorkers
  • Three off the over, UAE 102 for 8 after 28 overs
  • Just a reminder to those who are joining us as you wake up around the world, this is a 46-over match due to a late start because of a dew-drenched wicket. Afghanistan won the toss and put UAE in and had them at 7 for 3 after nine balls before UAE captain Aqib Malik (28) and Chirag Suri (17) put on 44 for the fourth wicket. Saurabh Gir the only other significant score with 17, before he was eighth out
  • WICKET Rohit Singh's bowled by Abdul Rashid for 0 and UAE are 104 for 9 after 29 overs
  • Justin James LHB and Waleed Ahmed RHB at the crease, Abdul Rashid 5-1-15-3
  • Aftab finishes his eighth over, 8-0-29-2, UAE 106 for 9 after 30 overs
  • Noor ul Haq OB replaces Abdul Rashid at the University End
  • Plenty of spin in the wicket now as it dries in the sun
  • WICKET as Noor has Justin James snaffled at short extra by Abdul Rashid and UAE finish on 106 after 30.4 overs
  • Afghanistan while still not being quite at their most lethal, Aftab not quite as potent as on other days as he focussed on control not pace, nevertheless bowled and fielded well in advantageous conditions to get UAE out for just 106.
  • Shir Shirzai, the Afghan captain took the new ball and 4-40 off his 10 overs, with all the other bowlers chipping in. Aqib Malik, Chirag Suri and Saurabh Gir impressed for UAE with the bat and if it hadn't been for being in some evident pain after he dove head-first into the crease for a run, Aqib could well have made more than his 28
  • The wicket's taking spin now, as it dries after the morning dew lay heavily upon it and with their spinners, UAE will be thinking they just might have a chance. Afghanistan with their batsmen will think they have every chance of winning too.
  • A short innings-break. Before Afghanistan and UAE go out again to decide who will join Nepal from their group to go through to the ACC U-19 Elite Cup semi-final to be played in Bangkok on Tuesday
  • Afghanistan's openers are Amanullah and Afsar Khan Zazai, UAE's captain Aqib Malik taking the new ball from the Don Muang End
  • FOUR, to Amanullah, down the ground, booming drive to a full delivery, one ball after a wild heave outside off as he came down the track, this is going to be an entertaining contest!
  • Afghanistan 4 for 0 after 1 over
  • FOUR to Afsar as he cuts Chirag Suri LB (in Oakley sunglasses) through point
  • FOUR more, this time to Amanullah as he lofts a Chirag half-volley over mid-off
  • Afghanistan 13 for 0 after 2 overs
  • Aqib Malik RFM takes himself off - either because he's still feeling the effects of those scraped knees and elbows from batting - or because he really wants to get spinners on at both ends ASAP - Waleed Ahmed OB comes on
  • A couple of minor alarms as the ball's still not coming through off the track, nevertheless Afghanistan 14 for 0 after 3 overs
  • WICKET And to a very good catch! Mohsin Khan at long-off running to his left and catching the flat drive as he dove to his left, two handed, Afsar out for 10 off 7 balls (2 fours) and that's a great effort in the field, wicket to Chirag Suri, Afghanistan 18 for 1 after 20 balls, Target 107
  • New batsman is Hashmatullah Sahidi LHB, talent to burn, but hasn't quite come off this tournament so far
  • Mohsin Khan's catch - one can still hear the smack of the ball in his left palm as he clutched the powerful Afsar drive, that ball was travelling
  • After 4 overs, Afghanistan 19 for 1
  • Waleed Ahmed OB has a touch of Saqlain Mushtaq about him, slightly round-arm on occasion, finishing his follow-through square on to the batsman
  • Afghanistan 20 for 1 after 5 overs, Target 107, Amanaullah 8* , Hashmatullah 2*; Chirag 1-14, Waleed 0-2
  • UAE supporting their bowlers well in the field
  • Chirag Suri LB causing some bother, putting plenty of revs on the ball
  • Tossing it high, inviting the drives
  • Afghanistan 23 for 1 after 6 overs, Target 107
  • Two slips in plce for Hashmatullah LHB as Waleed OB comes in to bowl the seventh over, from the Don Muang End
  • Two off the over, Afghanistan 25 for 1 after 7 overs, Amanullah 10*, Hashmatullah 5*, Waleed 0-4, Chirag 1-17
  • WICKET Amanullah's stumped, heaving, and Chirag Suri gets the reward for not being afraid to invite the drives. Amanullah 10 (20 balls, 2 fours) and UAE 25 foro 2 after 7.2 overs, Target 107
  • New batsman is Noor ul Haq - 'The Rock' - his team-mates call him and he'll need all his steadiness today if he's to get his team home
  • Umpire AK Rana just having a word with Chirag Suri and UAE captain Aqib Malik about the bowler's sledging
  • 1 off the Chirag over, Afghanistan 26 for 2 off 8 overs, Target 107, Hashmatullah 5*, Noor 0*; Chirag 2-18, Waleed 0-4
  • Just six runs off the last four overs, but the shackles are lifted by a Hashmatullah lofted drive over cover, Afghanistan 30 for 2 in the ninth over
  • But the bowler strikes back next ball trapping the left-hander lbw for UAE's third WICKET and UAE are cock a hoop and Afghanistan are 30 for 3 in the ninth over
  • End of the ninth over, and Afghanistan are 30 for 3, Target 107 looking further away than at the start of their innings
  • Noor ul Haq off the mark, cutting, with 2, Afghanistan 32 for 3 in the tenth over, Chirag Suri pitching just a little short this over
  • Najibullah Zadran LHB is the new batsman and almost run out for 0 as he's slow to set off following a Noor ul Haq call for a single
  • Chirag Suri causing all sorts of problems for the batsmen with his leg-breaks
  • End of over 10, Afghanistan 40 for 3, Target 107, Noor 3*, Najibullah 2*, Suri 5-0-28-2 Waleed 4-0-8-1
  • And that's LUNCH, with the game evenly poised, Afghanistan need another 67 off the next 36 overs, UAE need seven wickets. One good partnership and one good spell of bolwing will decide the match. Join us again in 30 minutes at 0735hrs GMT
  • Umpires Rana and Sarda are out in the middle, play's about to resume
  • Everyone thinks this game's going to be close - the wicket's difficult in a different way from the morning, now it's all set up for the spinners as it crumbles "like a fight day Test wicket" says Match Referee Richard Folds
  • Waleed Ahmed (OB) opens with a MAIDEN to Noor ul Haq RHB, Afghanistan 40 for 3 off 11 overs, Target 107
  • Chirag Suri LB to bowl his sixth over from the University End
  • It's a battle of wits and temperament as well as skill from here on in
  • 4 off the 12th over, Afghanistan 44 for 3 off 12 overs, Target 107 within 46 overs
  • Noor ul Haq planting his front foot down the wicket, getting head and elbow over the ball, he's on 5* (18 balls)
  • End of over 13, Afghanistan 46 for 3, Target 107 (46 overs), Noor 5*, Najibullah 6*, Waleed 1-10, Chirag 2-32
  • Najibullah comes down the wicket to lash a full-toss off Chirag but Dan D'Souza dives well to his left to save runs and Afghanistan remains on 46 for 3 in the 14th over. Two big appeals for lbw in the over, not out both times
  • MAIDEN by Chirag Suri, bowler and fielders doing well, Afghanistan 46 for 3 after 14 overs, Target 107 (46 overs)
  • Second MAIDEN on the trot. Waleed Ahmed bowling the occasional leg-break amidst his off-spin, Afghanistan 46 for 3 after 15 overs, Target 107 (46 overs)
  • FOUR by Najibulah LHB, pulling a Chirag long-hop in front of square, and that's Afghanistan's 50 (off 92 balls), FOUR two balls later - shot of the day - as he creams an off-drive to the cover boundary
  • Another FOUR to Najibullah as he drives hard to mid-on, who slides over the ball in the old practise-wickets and Afghanistan are 60 for 3 after 16 overs, 14 off this over, Target 107 (46 overs)
  • CHANCE Difficult one, but after the standards Mohsin Khan set in taking his first catch of the day, one that he will feel he should have got, Noor ul Haq survives the lofted straight drive, Afghanistan 61 for 3 in the 17th over
  • WICKET Najib skies the catch, high over the bowler's head but gets no distance and Justin James calls and waits and clutches it to his chest at mid-off, Najibullah out for 20 (26 balls, three 4s), Afghanistan 61 for 4 at the end of the 17th over
  • Afghanistan need another 46 runs, UAE another six wickets.
  • Rahmatullah Sahaq, a powerful stroke-player is the new bat, Noor ul Haq has faced 34 balls for his 6*
  • UAE turning to spin - even batsmen who don't really bowl too often - are being asked to bowl - Sathya Ramesh LB on in place of Waleed Ahmed 8-2-11-2, Afghanistan 61 for 4 in the 19th over
  • 1 off the Sathya over, Rahmatullah off the mark, Afghanistan 62 for 4 after 19 overs, Target 107 (46 overs)
  • Justin James SLA on at the University End replacing Chirag Suri 9-2-44-2, expensive but dangerous
  • On this wicket it's hard to judge the quality of a team because strokeplay is so difficult and bowling is considerably advantaged - it's now all about nerve from here on in
  • MAIDEN by Sathya Ramesh, Afghanistan remain on 64 for 4after 21 overs, Target 107 (46 overs)
  • First run in 10 balls, as Noor glances one that bounces to short third man
  • End of over 22, Afghanistan 67 for 4, Target 107 (46 overs)
  • FOUR Rahmatullah pulls powerfully and forces a Mohsin misfield at midwicket, Afghanistan 71 for 4 in the 23rd over
  • Followed up by another FOUR, this one driven over the bowler's head by Rahmatullah and Afghanistan are 75 for 4 after 23 overs, Target 107 (46 overs)
  • With the field well-spread, singles are on offer
  • Justin James SLA troubling Noor ul Haq, beating the outside edge with the last two balls of the over, Afghanistan 77 for 4 after 24 overs, Noor 8* (46 balls), Rahmatullah 12*(24 balls), Justin 3-0-0-7
  • Waleed Ahmed OB back on at the Don Muang End as the sun disappears behind the hazy clouds
  • Waleed 8-2-11-2 up to now and has troubled all the batsmen with his off-breaks
  • MAIDEN by Waleed to Rahmatullah
  • FOUR The Rock ignites, Noor ul Haq drives a Justin James half-volley powerfully through mid-off, Afghanistan 81 for 4 in the 26th over, Target 107 (46 overs)
  • Waleed to bowl his 10th and final over at the Don Muang End, leg slip in place
  • Mid-wicket, long-on and long-off all on the boundary as he comes into the powerful Rahmatullah
  • Just been privy to an excellent analysis of Waleed Ahmed's bowling - he finishes with another maiden for figures of 10-4-11-2 - "Waleed's not turning the ball as much as sliding it because of the way he undercuts the ball, with his palm facing up at the point of release, like Nathan Hauritz"
  • That analysis of Waleed was by ACC Development Officer Venkatesh Prasad who's watching proceedings closely
  • End of the 28th over, 9 off the over, Afghanistan 94 for 4, Noor 17*, Rahmatullah 19*, Target 107 (46 overs)
  • SIX powered over long-on by Rahmatullah off Justin James, and Afghanistan are 100 for 4 in the 29th over
  • FOUR to Noor now, through long-off, and it's just 2 to win now, Afghanistan 105 for 4 after 29 overs
  • Dan D'Souza to bowl what may be the last over, and his first ball's hit for FOUR by Rahmatullah all along the ground to midwicket and Afghanistan have won by SIX WICKETS
  • Good effort by UAE but in the end the greater abilities of Afghanistan proved decisive and it's now Afghanistan who go through along with Nepal from Group B of the ACC U-19 Elite Cup to the semi-finals on Tuesday

ACC U-19 Elite Cup 2011
