FINAL: AFGHANISTAN v NEPAL

  • ACC U-19 Elite Cup Final, Afghanistan v Nepal at Terdthai Cricket Ground, conditions are a little damp in patches on the turf because of overnight dew - nowhere near as foggy as you see in the pictures from the Bahrain v UAE match yesterday - but there are a few spots on the wicket that need to dry out. Good news is that the sun is doing its best to break through the haze
  • To all our fans and followers of these two teams a very good morning to you from Bangkok. Play is expected to get under way at or very close to 0230 hrs GMT (25 minutes from now)
  • 0215 hrs GMT: Umpires Ramani Batumalai and Ashwani Kumar Rana return from their latest inspection of the wicket and say that they'll go back out again in 15 minutes for another one, "the sun's up so it shouldn't take too long before we're absolutely happy with the dryness of the wicket," and it looks like a slightly delayed start but nevertheless it’ll be a full 50-over match
  • Afghanistan have put up their team for this ACC U-19 ELite Cup Final against Nepal, Afghanistan: Shir Shirzai (Captain) RHB/RM, Najib Zadran (LHB/OB, Aftab Alam (RHB/RMF), Hashmatullah Shahidi LHB, Afsar Khan Zazai RHB/WK, Noor-ul Haq RHB/OB, Nasir Ahmadzai RHB/LB, Mohibullah Paak RHB/RM, Abdul Rashid LHB/SLA, Younas Khan, RHB Rahmatullah Sahaq RHB; 12th Man Mohammad Yamin
  • Just one change for Afghanistan from the team that played in the semi-final against Hong Kong, pace-bowler Mohammad Yamin makes way for leg-spinner Nasir Ahmadzai (younger brother of former national captain Raees Ahmadzai) comes in for his first match of the tournament
  • Nepal's team for the ACC U-19 Elite Final v Afghanistan:
Rahul Vishwakarma LHB/SLA, Rajesh Pulami RHB/LB, Fazlur Rahman RHB/RM, Sagar Pun RHB, Naresh Budhayer RHB, Subash Khakurel RHB/WK, Pradeep Airee RHB/RM, Bhuwan Karki LHB/SLA, Bibek Dali RHB/LB, Avinash Karn LHB/LFM, Krishna Karki RHB/RFM; 12th Man Shiv Tandukar
  • Just one forced change to the Nepal line-up, Captain Prithu Baskota after twisting/straining a knee ligament in the semi-final against Qatar, is on enforced rest for a month at least, Rahul Vishvakarma steps up to captain and leg-spinner Bibek Dali comes in to the XI, also for his first match in Thailand
  • 0230 hrs GMT: The umpires have returned and say there'll be another inspection of the wicket in 15 minutes, "just a couple more spots but the sun's up and while it won't be bone dry, we expect it to be good enough for play and good enough for a Final quite soon", says Umpire Batumalai
  • Just to our left we see the injured Nepali captain Prithu Baskota on crutches being helped up the steps to the dressing-room by Afghanistan's Abdul Rashid, good to see the good feeling between the two sides
  • Both teams are the ACC's representatives in the ICC U/19 World Cup qualifier to be held in July in Ireland
  • Lot of talk about what's happened in the past prior to this match, but all the players and all of us know that what counts is what happens today - it's a fresh start, a fresh year and a fresh batch of aspiring players
  • 0245 hrs GMT: Match Refeere Aziz Gilani says that the toss will happen at 0300 hrs GMT and play will start 15 minutes after that GOOD NEWS
  • Both teams quite relaxed during their warm-ups, just some gentle stretching and knock-ups on the outfield - both coaches know their teams can play - it's all about what happens on the field now
  • Great thing about playing on this TCG track, of the six available for play, the one nearest to the pavilion is being used, it has the best pace and carry of them all as we saw in Nepal's and Afghanistan's opening matches when they made 391 and 326 respectively against Oman and Thailand
  • It's a wicket which will reward strokeplayers and bowlers who can do a little bit - both teams have those! Fazlur Khan, Sagar Pun and Pradeep Airee for Nepal with the bat, spinners Rahul V. and Bhuvan K. and pace-man Avinash K., Afghanistan - well, all of them play strokes, Shir Shirzai and Noor-ul Haq the steady ones, and Aftab Alam, Shir and Mohibullah with their fast/medium pacers and SLA Rashid the ones to watch.
  • TOSS - Afghanistan won the toss and have chosen to bat
  • Play starts in 10 minutes!
  • It's going to be a 50-overs a side in spite of the later start, the lunch interval is being reduced to 30 minutes and the extra half-hour is being taken
  • Everyone expects, everyone hopes, that it's going to be a great match. These two are undoubtedly the best U-19 sides in Asia
