INDIA WOMEN CRUISE PAST SRI LANKA

Tournament favourites India completed a 32 run win over hosts Sri Lanka at R. Premadasa Stadium as the Women's Emerging Asia Cup tournament finally got underway on Saturday after rain had played havoc washing out four games and forcing the organizers to reschedule the competition.

Put into bat first, India posted 171 for four in 38.5 overs and then bowled out Sri Lanka for 139 to get their first points in the four nation competition.

Tanuja Kanwar, who bowls left-arm seam and Sushree Dibyadarshini, who bowls off-spin shared six wickets between them as India completed an easy win.

A 36 run stand between Umesha Thimeshani and captain Harshitha Samarawickrama kept the Sri Lankans interested but the moment India found the breakthrough by dismissing Thimeshani, the hosts showed little fight.

The Sri Lankans collapsed losing their last seven wickets for 36 runs. All last six batsmen were dismissed for single digit scores.

Samarawickrama fought a lone battle posting a fine half-century. She faced 91 balls and hit four boundaries.

India had a decent start with openers Yastika Bhatia (26) Nuzhat Parween adding 36 runs. Importantly they finished off well. Captain Devika Vaidya top scored with 43 runs before retiring hurt.

Big hitting by Tejal Hasabnis down the order took the Sri Lankans by total surprise. She finished unbeaten on 37 off 36 balls with two boundaries.
